Who need Vietnam Visa?

Almost all foreigners with ordinary passports need an Entry visa to Vietnam except some included in the Visa Exemption List for stay in a specific duration.

What is Vietnam Visa approval letter?

Approval Letter is a paper which is granted by Vietnam immigration Department. It allows you to get Vietnam Visa Stamp at Vietnam International airport. 

What information do I need to provide to apply for my Vietnam visa approval letter?

How many ways to get Vietnam Visa?

There are two ways to get Vietnam visa:

– Get Vietnam visa on arrival: You can apply Vietnam visa online at home to get visa approval letter issued by Vietnam Immigration Department in only 1-2 working days. This letter shall grant you permission to get visa stamp on arrival, against presentation of also your original passport, 2 passport-sized photos, a fully-filled entry and exit form, and stamping fee.

– Get Vietnam visa at Vietnam Embassy: This is the traditional way to get Vietnam visa. You can apply for the visa by directly visit Vietnam Embassy in person and follow their procedures. You can get the letter after 3-5 days or even more depending on each specific Embassy. The visa shall be attached to your original passport.

How many blank pages do I need in my passport?

In Vietnam, the Vietnam Immigration Officer at the airport will require your passport to have at least two blank pages, one for the visa sticker and the other  for the visa stamp. Your entry may be rejected when this criterion is not met.

Can I use a Vietnamese approval letter for entering Vietnam by land?

No, this document is only applicable for those travelling by air through one of the Vietnamese International Airports (Ha Noi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City). If travelling by land, you need to contact your nearest embassy or consulate for submitting your Vietnamese Visa application.

Can I enter Vietnam earlier than my granted arrival date in the visa approval letter?

No, you cannot. You need to enter on the same or later date of arrival granted in your visa approval letter.Visa dates are not flexible. A visa will be valid from the entry date to the exit date as printed. You can visit and stay in Vietnam any time between these two dates, i.e. you cannot enter Vietnam before the entry date and you must leave by the exit date. Therefore, you should be clear about the DATE OF ENTRY AND EXIT on your application form.

Can I enter Vietnam later than my granted arrival date in visa approval letter?

Yes, you can enter later than the granted arrival date in the visa approval letter, providing that you exit by granted exit date.

What if my passport is expired? Can I apply for a visa to Vietnam?

You cannot apply for your Vietnam visa when your passport is expired. In that case, please renew your passport before applying for a Vietnam visa. So before applying visa, you need to check your passport to make sure it is valid for at least 6 months.

Do children travelling with parents need Vietnamese Visa?

Visa rules and fees for children should follow the same procedure as adults if they have their own passports. Children who are included in parents’ passports must apply for an approval letter to get visa on arrival at Vietnam airport as adults but they will not need to pay the stamp fee. The parents should sign the applications on behalf of children under 14 years old.

Are there any exceptions with this type of visa?

Yes, visa on arrival is NOT VALID for OVERLAND ENTRY. The three international airports in Vietnam that you can receive your visa stamp with this approval letter are: Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) and Danang Airport (Da Nang).

Note: If you plan to enter Vietnam by land or sea, please visit a Vietnamese embassy to get your visa.

Can I travel without the letter and get the visa when I arrive?

No, you cannot. In order to board the plane, you must show the approval letter to the airlines. This letter is also compulsory in order for you to get the visa at the Vietnam airport. Therefore, we recommend that you leave plenty of time to apply for the visa to avoid having to delay or change your flight.

What if I change my flight and arrive at another airport in Vietnam?

Visa on arrival works if you arrive at any of the three international airports: Tan Son Nhat (in Ho Chi Minh City); Noi Bai (in Hanoi) and Da Nang (in Da Nang). There is no problem with switching between these three airports.
